Daddy, Mary Kay and Linda at Shasta Dam, Ca.
Sailor Daddy was not lazy. He worked a lot. He did not lay about. He worked on the house. And when that was finished he built us a house trailer. They bought a new Frazer Automobile in 1947 to tow it. It was a nice trailer,

painted Forest Green to match the new car. It had a shower, toilet, kitchen and slept four. No, he was not lazy. The problem was, being a carpenter in Northern California he was laid off when it rained. And it rained a lot in the winter. He worked on home projects when he was not working. He collected his unemployment and was very happy being home. He did not drink or run around. He loved his home and his family. But he made a very poor living for us. My Mother had to work in order to make ends meet. She worked as a waitress and she baked pies which she sold to a restaurant. Sailor Daddy did a lot of the house work. He taught me how to clean. Navy style. The tiles in the bathroom and kitchen got cleaned with a toothbrush. Hardwood floors were dry mopped every day as well as the base boards wiped. Furniture was dusted every day and lemon oiled once a week. Floors were waxed once a week. Dishes were washed, hand dried and put away after each meal. Clothes were folded military style. Beds made with hospital corners. Venetian Blinds were dusted each day and windows washed once a week. All this with Classical Music playing on the phonograph in the back ground. I could clean as well as any adult when I was five years old. House work ad nausea. I hated and do to this day, HATE HOUSEWORK! My sister Linda was not required to do chores. She was the baby and too little. Strange she never seemed to grow big enough to do chores. My Sailor Daddy was not allowed to spank her. She was to small. Too young. Too little. Too delicate. She was of average size and only 18 mos. younger than me. But, my Mother always protected her. Daddy was allowed to spank me. Over his knee with a bare hand. It hurt, I hated it. As a result I was a very well behaved little girl. Daddy once spanked me for a broken kitchen window. Linda got mad at me and threw an orange at me. It hit the window and the window broke. He spanked me! Sobbing, I asked him why he spanked me when I didn’t break the window. “You ducked”. he replied. Linda smirked and my resentment of her deepened.
On Saturdays, my Mother would do the laundry with her wringer washer and Daddy would hang the clothes on the line. Then he would work on the house or house trailer or the yard. He always had a garden. On Sundays we went to Mass and then we got in our car and set off for an adventure. We would drive to San Francisco to Fisherman’s’ Wharf. Or Golden Gate Park, the Japanese

Tea Garden was a favorite. Daddy would tell us stories of when he was in Japan during the war. He would take us to the Fairmont Hotel where we would order dessert. We could not afford to dine there. But, on Sundays after Church in our best clothes we would go to some of the best places and have dessert. I think Daddy wanted us to learn to be comfortable in the best environments. And benefiting from his example I was never intimidated by my surroundings. This vetted me well in later life. Sometimes we would head up the coast to, Jenner By The Sea. We would buy Clam Chowder from one of the Sea Food Restaurants. Other times we would go to the Oyster Farms and get a gunny sack full of Oysters. We would take them home and Daddy would show us how to make Boston Style Oyster Stew. With Cream and butter served with little round Oyster crackers we had saved from the restaurants. He would always ask the restaurants for crackers, ” for the little girls, so they don’t get car sick.” They were free. These were fed to us to keep us from complaining about being hungry. He was a great site see er. A born tourist. He never met a stranger. If we saw a pasture with an unusual colored goat or sheep, he would drive up to the farm house and chat up the farmer about the animals. Everyone likes to talk about their domain and he loved to glean information. All of this was free entertainment as far as he was concerned and free education. Remember this was before television and National Geo. Daddy was very knowledgeable and when he didn’t know he would say to me; “Ask your teacher tomorrow, Mary Kay.” He thought teachers knew everything. When a teacher would tell me they did not know the answer to the question, he would be crest fallen. Often muttering some excuse…”Maybe it doesn’t exist.” or… “Maybe there is no answer”. One year he bought a set of used Encyclopedias . He was so thrilled with them. Now when I asked him a question he did not have an answer for he would say..” Look it up! And then ask your teacher. And if she doesn’t know the answer give it to her.” Now I was a pretty smart little girl and I liked being “teachers’ pet”. I had enough intelligence to not indicate to my teacher that I was better informed than she. I would nod and say;”Yes Sir”. ,
My Sailor Daddy loved classical music and Show Tunes. He would often come home with a 78 record and we would play it until it was scratchy and worn. There was often music in the house. No comic books. No chewing gum. Sunday Newspaper Comic Page was read by him to us with great gusto. Robert Luis Stevenson was read by me over and over as well as Grimms’ Fairytales often out loud. I had a good voice and projected it well with drama in the proper places as he had encouraged me to do.
He would take me to the Opera in San Francisco. My Mother and sister would not go with him. We had no tickets. We would sneak in after intermission. Often being asked to move from our seats. My Daddy would fumble with an old ticket stub and mumble an apology and look for another couple of empty seats. I was young and didn’t realize this was out of the norm. After the Opera or the theater, yes we went to all the stage plays and musicals. I saw all the second acts. He would take me across the street from the theaters on Geary Street to “Davids’ Deli”. Where he would order one Blinni. Which we would share. He would order one cup of tea, which was served with a pot of hot water. He would drink the first cup and then poor me the second. Allowing me to put all the sugar cubes and lemons or cream that I wanted in my cup. We would study the programs and theater bills that had been discarded on the street. We would discuss the performance and critique the acts. We reveled in our knowledge and passion for the arts. This passion for the arts stayed with me through adulthood. He would say with gusto; “Never let a lack of money deprive you of the finer things in life.” He never did!
Camping in State Parks before Trailer was built
When it was summer and Daddy could be working at a good paying job, he would pack us up in the house trailer that he built and we would vagabond across the United States. From California to Massachusetts taking the entire three months of summer. We had little money. When we ran out of money, he would look for a building being built and go to work until we had enough money to take us further down the road.
When we were in Chicago Daddy insisted we go to a live Vaudeville Show. It was a matinee and had a dog act. The dog master had a long line of hot dogs tucked in his pocket. After each trick he would drag them out and pass them under the dog’s nose.
“A lick and a smell, that is all you get”!
That line became my Daddy’s favorite line. He used it any time a promise could not be totally fulfilled. Or if anything was not quite the pay off we expected. Unfulfilled Expectations we learned to handle with a little humor.

We loved traveling Route 66 the song was popular and we knew all the words. Daddy could carry a tune and we would harmonize together. My Mother, Bless her heart could not ” Carry a tune in a Basket”, a phrase she was fond of saying often. It was true. She was tone deaf. She had the good sense to not sing. Only time she would sing was at Birthday Parties when she could count on being drowned out by the others singing. She would join in with clapping and encouraging jesters. My sister Linda unfortunately inherited my Mothers’ singing gene. She unfortunately was not as considerate as Mother and she would sing along. But Daddy and I didn’t care we would sing loud and strong for all of us.
Daddy would start off;
“Mary Kay, he would sing, If you ever plan to motor west Just take my way that’s the highway that’s the best.
We would all join in;

Well it winds from Chicago to L A. More than 2000 miles all the way.
